GOVERNMENT has budgeted $1.5million to fund the replacement of the automatic weather observation system (AWOS) at the Nadi and Nausori international airports.
The AWOS replacement project will improve weather monitoring for the aviation sector and communities living near the airports.
A total of $0.62million has also been allocated for the upgrade of the Nadi radar antenna.
This funding should complete the upgrade of the Nadi radar antenna in this upcoming budget cycle, which is a critical instrument used for domestic and regional weather forecasting.

Naval officers aboard a Northern Air aircraft spotted the stranded boat on a reef then alerted the Fiji Navy on the location.
The boat left Gau island on Sunday carrying an injured person with Dr Mika Lutumailagi of Qarani Health Centre, a nurse and the boat owner.

The South Pacific Aviation Training Institute (SPATI), which is to be based at Nausori International Airport, is a subsidiary of Northern Air, the country’s second biggest domestic carrier and owned by veteran pilot, Captain Rainjesh San. This is going to be the third flying school in Fiji.
Already in operation at the Nadi International Airport, are the Pacific Flying School (PFS) which was established in 1986 by the late Don Collingwood, the owner of Sunflower Airline, which was later acquired by national airline Fiji Airways (formerly known as Air Pacific).
